Oral Cancer Exam

Oral Cancer Examination

The American Cancer Society estimates that more than 30,000 new cases of oral cancer are diagnosed each year, with over 7,000 resulting in fatalities. Early diagnosis and treatment significantly enhance the effectiveness of oral cancer treatment. At Dentology Dentists, we offer annual cancer examinations to facilitate early detection and intervention.

Oral cancer, being pathologic, often lacks early symptoms, making it challenging to identify without a thorough examination. Varieties of oral cancer include melanoma, adenocarcinoma, and teratoma. The most commonly found cancer in the mouth typically originates in the mouth and lip tissues and is known as malignant squamous cell carcinoma. Additionally, oral cancer can manifest in areas such as the throat, gums, salivary glands, tongue, and face. Regular cancer examinations are crucial in detecting oral cancer in its early stages, improving the chances of successful treatment.

What can be expected?

The oral cancer examination is entirely painless. Our dental professionals will carefully inspect your face, glands, and neck for unusual bumps or growths. In some cases, lasers may pinpoint pathologic changes, allowing for a more in-depth examination of the skin to identify lesions that might not be visible to the naked eye. Any red spots or sores will be scrutinized for potential signs of oral cancer, including those on the bottom of the mouth or the front of the tongue. Persistent bleeding sores, non-healing wounds, and hardened gray or white raised lesions inside the mouth (known as leukoplakia) will also be thoroughly examined.

Additionally, any sores, lumps, or thickened tissue in the throat can indicate cancer. If there are indications of these cancerous features, we will work to identify the most suitable treatment options tailored to your individual needs. Depending on the specific diagnosis, treatment may encompass strategies such as radiation therapy, excision, or chemotherapy.

It’s noteworthy that a significant majority of oral cancers (75%) stem from easily avoidable habits such as smoking tobacco or excessive alcohol consumption. We offer various resources to assist in breaking these potentially harmful habits.
