Nitrous Oxide

Nitrous Oxide (Sedation Dentistry)

Nitrous oxide is a non-irritating, colourless, and sweet-smelling gas that is entirely safe to breathe. It has been the primary form of sedation in dentistry for many years. The patient receives mainly oxygen (50-70%) with no less than 30% nitrous oxide.

Throughout the sedation, the patient can independently breathe, retain all bodily functions, and remain in control. While under the effects of nitrous oxide, the patient may experience drowsiness and mild amnesia, which can contribute to making the dental procedure more manageable and comfortable.

Advantages of using Nitrous Oxide in sedation dentistry:

  • The sedation can be altered at any time, meaning the depth of sedation can be increased or lowered
  • There are no ill feelings afterwards, meaning no “hangover.”
  • It is entirely safe and will cause no issues to your heart or lungs
  • It is very effective in minimizing gagging
  • It starts to kick in almost immediately as within 20 seconds, the nitrous oxide will reach the brain, and shortly after that, a feeling of relaxation and loss of pain will endure
